Why Choose Cleveland Clinic London for Hip Revision Surgery?

We’re one of the only private hip revision surgery programmes in the U.K. Our highly skilled orthopaedic consultants offer a depth of experience in assessing and treating pain after hip replacement. We care for thousands of patients each year, many of whom feel better immediately after surgery.

Highlights of our hip revision service include:

  • Expertise: Our team is at the leading edge of revision hip replacement and successfully treats complex cases. We conduct research that’s improving outcomes and share our knowledge with providers worldwide through publications. You may have been told nothing is wrong with your current hip. But if you’re having pain, we can help.
  • Accurate diagnosis: We use the most sophisticated imaging equipment, and radiologists specialising in musculoskeletal issues interpret the results. Your care also involves blood tests to check for signs of infection or debris. For cases of suspected infection, we work with our infectious disease consultants. Hip revision consultants work together as a team to correctly diagnose the cause of the pain.
  • Personalised care: For most patients, we use personalised 3D preoperative plans, 3D-printed guides and anatomical models. Occasionally, we use 3D-printed implants during hip revision surgery. For these implants, we use a customised titanium device. Special technology, a team of engineers and a 3D printer enable us to tailor the device to your needs. Our team is among the most experienced in the world with this technique.
  • Early detection: In some cases, we detect hip issues before they cause pain. People with metal-on-metal hip implants and devices that have been recalled may benefit from yearly hip imaging. These scans help determine whether the device is functioning properly. If there’s a concern, we discuss whether revision replacement is appropriate.

Reasons You May Need Revision Hip Replacement Surgery

Pain after hip replacement surgery or hip resurfacing may be due to (most likely first):

  • Loose artificial hip: Devices that aren’t properly anchored to nearby bones can come loose.
  • Infection: During the initial hip replacement surgery, bacteria can invade tissue near the new joint. Infections may also occur years later if germs enter your body due to skin, bladder or teeth problems and settle in hip tissue.
  • Dislocation: The bones of your hip joint repeatedly slip out of place.
  • Device recall: Sometimes, devices get recalled due to a high risk of complications. We weigh up the benefits and risks before recommending revision surgery.
  • Fracture of the bone around the hip implant: A bad fall can break hip bones, making the joint unstable.
  • Mechanical issues: These issues include artificial devices that are too big or small for your body.
  • Tissue reaction: Debris from the initial procedure can cause irritation, leading to muscle damage.
  • Broken device: An artificial hip can break if it’s bearing too much weight.
  • Uneven legs: An artificial hip can cause one leg to be shorter or longer than the other.

Hip Revision Surgery: What To Expect

If revision hip replacement is appropriate, your care includes:

  1. Precise surgical planning: We use CT scans to determine the type, size and position of the implant you need.
  2. Device customisation: In some cases, it’s necessary to customise the hip replacement device. This process can take a few weeks. We schedule your procedure shortly after it’s ready.
  3. Surgery: Consultants remove the old hip and damaged tissue and then carefully implant the device. They perform several checks to ensure the new hip is precisely where it needs to be.
  4. Recovery: Your recovery starts in a private room in our intensive care unit — one of the U.K.’s largest and most advanced. Our attentive staff helps you out of bed, enabling you to take your first steps within a day of surgery.
  5. Physiotherapy: After discharge, physiotherapists help you safely get moving again.
  6. Follow-up care: You come back for periodic imaging and assessments to ensure recovery is progressing as expected. If you have any questions between appointments, we can assist you.
